Does hypnotherapy actually work? What a session really feels like

If your only picture of hypnosis comes from a stage show — someone clucking like a chicken, apparently under a stranger's spell — then hypnotherapy probably looks a bit alarming. I understand completely. It's also almost nothing like the real thing.

I'm Tania, a hypnotherapist working online with people right across the UK, and one of my favourite parts of a first consultation is watching someone's shoulders drop as I explain what hypnotherapy honestly is. So let me do that here.

You are always in control

This is the myth I most want to clear up, because it stops so many people from getting help they'd genuinely benefit from: hypnotherapy does not take away your control. You don't "go under." You can't be made to do anything against your wishes — that's stage theatre, not therapy. Throughout a session you stay aware of where you are, you can hear me, and you could open your eyes and stop at any moment. Most people describe the feeling as being deeply relaxed but completely present — a little like that drifting, unhurried state just before you fall asleep.

What actually happens in a session

There's no swinging pocket watch and no couch. Here's the real shape of it:

  • We talk first. We start with a proper conversation about what's brought you here and what you'd like to be different.
  • You get comfortable. You simply sit somewhere comfortable and close your eyes — usually your own sofa, at home, with no travelling.
  • I guide you into a calm, focused state using gentle, guided relaxation.
  • We do the work, with your agreement, using calming imagery and positive suggestions aimed at the change you came for.
  • You come back gently, and it builds over a short series of sessions.

So — does it work?

Honestly, hypnotherapy isn't magic, and no responsible therapist should promise a guaranteed outcome. What it is is a well-established, gentle way of working with your own mind rather than against it. It tends to help most with the everyday things that respond to relaxation and changing an unhelpful mental habit: anxiety and stress, trouble sleeping, confidence, fears, and habits like smoking. It works best when you actually want the change — because all I'm ever doing is helping your own mind focus on it.

The easiest way to find out

If you're curious but unsure, that's exactly what a free initial consultation is for. It's a relaxed, no-obligation chat where you can ask anything and see whether we feel like a good fit — with no pressure to book anything afterwards.

You can arrange yours through the Book a session page. Sessions are online, wherever you are in the UK.
